Topographical Survey in Friar Park

Friar Park, a public area located in Wednesbury, West Midlands, is proposed to be redeveloped for new housing.

Context

The site, having sat untouched for over 30 years, has been released for development by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and Sandwell Council following the WMCA’s purchase last year of the former Severn Trent works, which covers just under half the overall 26.4-hectare site. The site is strategic locally, having the potential to deliver much needed dwellings for the area whilst also easing pressure on green belt land.

Solution

With the Consultant Team appointed and existing topographical data considerably out of date, there was a need to quickly undertake a detailed Topographic Survey (~ 300,000m2) of the site. Client Campbell Reith approached DYWIDAG, as a new customer, to cost the Topographical Survey works for the site, as one of three quotes they required as part of its competitive tender process with its client WMCA.

The short lead time required and adherence to the overall programme was extremely important to Campbell Reith, as well as completing the works within their programme of work. DYWIDAG advised that survey works could begin as instructions were received and that the final drawings would be made available within three weeks. As such, DYWIDAG was successfully awarded the contract.

The project was not without its challenges; short winter days impacted the project, as well as the weather, which was extremely severe at the time. There were also inaccessible areas within the survey boundary too, which needed factoring in.

Speaking about the work of DYWIDAG, Chris Brady, Partner, Campbell Reith said: “For DYWIDAG to deliver this today, on programme, is no mean feat and I’m extremely impressed and grateful - fantastic effort”, with Barish Turan, Associate, Campbell Reith adding: “Many thanks to you all at DYWIDAG for your remarkable efforts to deliver this survey on time.”

Works were undertaken for three weeks between 29 January - 19 February 2021, with DYWIDAG deploying Total Stations, traverse kit, and GPS kit.
