Supporting Long-Term Bridge Performance on the Papineau-LeBlanc Bridge

Context​

Opened in 1969, the Papineau–Leblanc Bridge is an early cable-stayed bridge constructed in North America and serves as a vital transportation link between Laval and Montréal on Autoroute 19, crossing the Rivière des Prairies. ​

To ensure the long-term reliability and safety of this important structure, Transports Québec is undertaking a major rehabilitation program scheduled through summer 2027. The refurbishment includes replacement of bridge components such as guardrails, wheel guards, roadway pavement, waterproofing membrane, and other structural upgrades intended to extend the service life of the bridge while maintaining traffic capacity.​

Our Impact​

DYWIDAG supplied and installed a new Stay Cable System in replacement of the existing cable system. During the exchange, the natural frequencies of the old and new stay cables where measured and the force calculated by applying the DYWIDAG Cable Force Algorithm, ensuring the design assumptions are correct and the install can progress to the next installation to steps safely.​
Furthermore, the cables are now equipped with dampers to reduce cable vibration. The working conditions of which were checked using the DYWIDAG Bridge Monitoring System.
