Combining automated solutions, with expert manual inspections, we deliver tailored, end-to-end services, to keep your rail infrastructure safe, operational, and compliant. DYWIDAG’s rail monitoring services provide real-time insights into rail conditions using products such as Smart Temp, Void Monitor, and Smart Tilt and more.
What we monitor
Rail temperature monitoring

Rail temperature informs the decision to keep a line open, or under restrictions, during periods of extreme weather: hot weather speed restrictions to mitigate/prevent track buckles, caused by rail expansion in summer, and the risk of rail breaks in winter.
Rail temperature can varyb considerably compared to air temperature along a route, so a single forecast figure, applied to a whole section, is a blunt instrument. DYWIDAG provides remote rail temperature monitoring, that provides the measured temperature of the rail at known locations, continuously, and without anyone present on site, so restrictions can be imposed where and when the rail temperature requires them and lifted when it does not.
DYWIDAG Smart Temp quickly attaches to the rail with two high-strength magnets and is energised only on contact with the rail, and stops sending upon detachment, so every reading received is a reading from the rail. Deployed at the known hot spots across a rail route, the Smart Temo units build a live picture of where the rail is running hottest. All relayed data to Infrastructure Intelligence is forwarded to the infrastructure manager's control room system (e.g. Network Rail's RADAR system, U.K.). The season's record shows which sites consistently reach critical temperature, so the following year's restrictions can be planned on measured history.
- Network Rail Product Approval PA05/07912, fully compliant with the functional and technical requirements for remote rail temperature monitoring devices
- FIR sensor, resolution 0.02°C, accuracy ±0.2°C, operating to 70°C on the rail and from -27°C ambient
- Energised only on contact with the rail, stops sending if detached, GPS located to 2.5m with position reported daily and whenever moved
- Readings every 15 minutes between 08:00 and 20:00 in standard mode, fully configurable in advanced mode, sent immediately when a threshold is crossed
- Six-month battery, five-hour recharge, more than 500 cycles, IP67, with battery and signal strength indicators
- Alarms by SMS and email, forwarded to the infrastructure manager's control room systems (i.e. RADAR)

Void monitoring

A void beneath a sleeper typically shows itself only under traffic, whether it has formed through ballast and drainage deterioration, or through movement of the ground beneath the formation: a collapsed culvert, old workings, dissolution features, or works under or beside the line.
DYWIDAG monitors voiding remotely and continuously under live traffic, so the size of a void at each location, and its rate of growth, are known between inspections, and the result of maintenance is measured, not assumed.
DYWIDAG Smart Void measures voiding automatically every time a train passes: the unit waits in low-power standby, is triggered by the approaching train, and records rail displacement at up to 120Hz under real operating load. Data reaches the Infrastructure Intelligence platform at scheduled intervals, and immediately when a threshold is exceeded, so a developing void can be tamped before it requires a restriction, and the readings before and after tamping show whether the repair has held.
- Automatic measurement under passing trains, recording rail displacement at up to 120Hz under real operating load
- Magnetic fixing to bull nose and flat bottom rail in seconds, no specialist tools, minimal on-track time
- Scheduled reporting, with immediate alerts when thresholds are exceeded, forwarded to the infrastructure manager's control room systems
- Low-power standby between trains, with up to six months of battery life
- Built-in GPS for device location and data traceability
- Void trend per location, with readings before and after tamping to prove the repair

Slope and earthworks monitoring
The failure of a cutting or embankment onto a live rail line can occur between periodic inspections, with no prior warning at the surface.
Climate change, extreme weather events and/or construction activity result in increased events. DYWIDAG's slope and earthworks monitoring detects movement at the surface the moment it happens and confirms it with an image, so that a train can be stopped and the site assessed even before anyone is sent to site.
The DYWIDAG Smart Guard earthworks event detection system delivers a notification within six seconds of movement, with a picture to confirm it. Wireless tilt sensors on ground posts sample continuously and report immediately on an event; when a threshold is breached. Cameras at the gateway capture the slope by day and night, and the alert reaches engineers by SMS, email and dashboard. Automated total stations (ATS), laser scanning and InSAR route screening add absolute movement, slope profile and wide-area coverage, and in Infrastructure Intelligence every monitored earthwork on a route is shown on one map. Where the depth, direction and rate of movement within the slope must be known, surface monitoring is combined with borehole instrumentation:
- Smart Guard earthworks event detection, Network Rail approved PA05/07270, CE, UKCA and FCC certified
- Notification within six seconds of movement, with camera verification in colour by day and infrared by night
- Fully wireless: LoRa to 6km from the gateway, 4G or wired gateway, IP68 sensors and IP67 cameras, 3.2 years of sensor battery life
- Tilt sensors sampling at 3.9Hz with repeatability better than 0.0003°, routine reporting from five minutes to 24 hours
- Pole mounted on embankments and cuttings, with further assets added within gateway range
- Image comparison against a historical baseline by overlay, side by side or timeline, with remote camera triggering
- Complimentary to automated and manual inclinometers, ATS, laser scanning and InSAR

Survey and automated total stations

Any work undertaken beside, beneath, or on the railway, has to be proven not to have disturbed the track. For piling or excavation next to a live line, embankment strengthening, bridge works or dewatering, the railway normally has to keep its full permissible speed, so track geometry must remain within tolerance at all times, and any deviation be known within minutes by the site team and the asset protection engineer.
For an under-track crossing, the question is whether the drive has settled or heaved the track, and whether the line can be handed back at full speed when the shift ends. DYWIDAG provides remote track geometry monitoring as a complete service for all of these, from baseline survey to handback record.
Bi-axial tilt sensors on the sleepers of each line report tilt, cant and twist over the shortest train wheelbase, with overlapping coverage configured to the infrastructure manager's standards. Automated total stations (ATS), GNSS and laser scanning add absolute movement and a digital baseline, so the handback survey is compared against the same record as the monitoring. In Infrastructure Intelligence, movement at an intervention limit alerts stakeholders within 15 minutes and movement beyond threshold alerts immediately, with live data and daily reports for all parties. Installation and removal are staged with the construction programme.
- Sleeper-mounted bi-axial tilt sensors, spaced to the shortest train wheelbase with overlapping coverage, to the infrastructure manager's track monitoring standard
- Automated total stations, GNSS and 3D laser scanning for absolute movement and a digital baseline, so monitoring and handback survey share one record
- Cant and twist plotted continuously, read against the position of the works
- Alerts within 15 minutes of an intervention limit, and immediately beyond threshold
- Live data, trends and daily reports for the contractor, the designer and the asset protection engineer together
- Under-track crossings, adjacent piling and excavation, embankment strengthening and bridge works, through to handback
- Installati.on and removal staged with the construction programme, within short access periods

Track geometry
DYWIDAG measures the railway as well as instrumenting it.
Our surveyors and monitoring technicians are employed directly by DYWIDAG and are available 24/7, providing the advantage of the baseline survey before works, the monitoring during them, and the final survey afterwards, delivered by one team, and sitting alongside the sensor data in Infrastructure Intelligence.
On the track, we deliver track alignment assessments, precision levelling to <0.5mm, platform gauging and clearance analysis, and overhead line height and stagger. On structures and earthworks, 3D laser scanning and point cloud surveys record the full geometry of an asset, digital imaging correlation and structured deflection surveys measure how it responds under load, and condition and dilapidation evaluations record its state before and after works. Where readings are required more often than a survey visit allows, automated total stations measure prisms on a programmed schedule with no staff on or near the line, and InSAR satellite data adds millimetre-level ground deformation along whole routes.
- Track alignment assessments, platform gauging and clearance analysis, and overhead line (OHL) height and stagger measurements
- Automated total stations giving survey-grade three-dimensional displacement on a programmed schedule, with no staff on or near the line
- Surveyors, monitoring technicians and rope access teams employed directly by DYWIDAG
- Sub-millimetre precision levelling to <0.5mm, and topographical surveys using GPS and total stations
- High-definition 3D laser scanning and point cloud surveys, with targeted patch scanning
- Digital imaging correlation, structured deflection surveys, and condition and dilapidation evaluations
- InSAR ground deformation along a route, millimetre-level, bi-weekly updates, with historical analysis and processing for vegetated areas

Ground and borehole monitoring
Where an embankment, cutting or retaining structure is moving, or is suspected of it, DYWIDAG installs and reads the borehole instrumentation that establishes the depth, direction and rate of that movement, and proves afterwards whether sheet piling, reprofiling and/or drainage has stopped it.
The same instrumentation characterises the ground before a scheme is designed and shows during works that any excavation or dewatering beside the line is not affecting the ground profile.
Inclinometers are the primary instrument supported by piezometers. Installed through the slope into stable ground, they locate the depth of any failure surface and show the magnitude, direction and rate of movement over time. In-place inclinometers report automatically through data loggers and are alarmed against agreed thresholds, so acceleration on a developing failure surface is identified as it happens. Manual probe surveys provide the baseline, with independent verification and periodic monitoring. DYWIDAG's own field teams travel the rail network, reading inclinometers and piezometers on a programmed cycle, so a route's whole earthworks portfolio is managed by one team. In Infrastructure Intelligence, boreholes are presented in three dimensions along the earthwork, showing displacement with depth and its development between readings, alongside the surface monitoring for the same slope:

- DYWIDAG's own field teams reading boreholes with manual inclinometers and piezometers across the network on a programmed cycle
- Three-dimensional borehole views in Infrastructure Intelligence, showing displacement with depth and its development between readings
- Depth of the shear surface, and the magnitude, direction and rate of movement, from cumulative displacement against a fixed toe in stable ground

Tunnel and structure monitoring

A railway tunnel can be inspected only in a possession, and between possessions its lining goes on moving where the ground around it settles, where water finds its way through the structure, or where piling, excavation or a new tunnel drive takes place above or alongside it.
DYWIDAG instruments the lining and portals so that the cross-section, the clearance to the kinematic envelope and the condition of cracks at the portals are known continuously, in normal operation, throughout works that could affect the tunnel and during strengthening or relining, and gives added information on the strengthening works required.
Convergence arrays, tilt sensors and crackmeters report through data loggers, gateways and repeaters along the bore, where mains power and communications are rarely available. Automated total stations track prisms on the lining, laser scanning and point cloud surveys measure the bore profile against the kinematic envelope, and camera-based inspection records the lining between visits. In Infrastructure Intelligence, readings are plotted by chainage with alarms against agreed thresholds, and where a tunnel passes beneath or beside works, lining movement is read against the ground and track geometry monitoring for the site.
- Convergence, shape arrays, crackmeters and tilt sensors on the lining and portals, reporting through loggers, gateways and repeaters along the bore
- 3D laser scanning, point cloud surveys and automated total stations, with clearance and gauging analysis against the kinematic envelope
- Lining movement read against the ground and track geometry monitoring for works above or beside the tunnel, with readings plotted by chainage
- Camera-based inspection of the lining between possessions
- Monitoring during strengthening and relining as well as in normal operation
- Coverage along the full bore without mains power or communications at the sensor
